As an extensive coalition of higher education institutions, CASI has created access for the aviation community to over 400 scientific, engineering, and business professors. CASI has demonstrated capacity to draw on up to 50 faculty and students simultaneously. Potential capacity is perhaps 20% (or 80) of these 400 professors to meet aviation community research needs. This is because a professor is expected to spend about 40% of their time teaching, 40% on research (a mix of basic and applied), and 20% on service to their university and to society. Matching this extensive capability to the needs of the aviation community is one of the key reasons that the CASI coalition exists. The most important steps in ascertaining the ability of CASI to support a potential aviation customer's research needs are:
A prospective CASI customer may know exactly what professors they want to work with, or they may not. In the former case, the customer should inform the CASI leadership at the involved campuses and the CASI Program Manager. Then the customer could start working directly with those known professors. If the prospective customer does not know specifically what CASI researchers are available, then they should contact CASI leadership or the CASI Program Manager to learn the Center's capabilities. To efficiently help the aviation customer identify available CASI capabilities, CASI has developed an online database. Potential customers can easily search this database to find the expertise needed. The database will contain the information on all researchers currently (or recently) engaged in CASI research support. After determining that expertise is available when needed, the CASI leadership will invite available researchers to proposed competitive approaches for consideration. The CASI Board of Directors is well equipped to do this, and in fact has helped build over 60 CASI research teams over the past 3 years. |
